Tatweer Center

Benghazi, Libya

2009

190.000 m²

Located at a particular piece of land where Libyan rough climate and desert formation meet with sea and ease off, Tatweer Centre introduces a “life center”, not an introverted shopping box where only retail activities take place. The project advocates place making to increase social and public activities aiming to boost the community life which is lack of adequate amount of facilities. Considering the significance of its location as offering comfort and peace, Tatweer Centre that accommodates approximately 30 000 sq.m seeks ways to provide a permeable environment to transform its place as one of the public hubs of the country. Establishing a new dialog between sea and city, the project creates a strip in north-south direction and likely to boost a cornice for city of Benghazi. The design incorporates a market bazaar offering a vibrant outdoor atmosphere equipped with several ponds and lawns which are notably being suffered from their inexistency in Benghazi. Tatweer Centre arms up the retail and cultural settings of Benghazi and seizes the invaluable Mediterranean Sea view celebrating the long history of the city in Mediterranean culture making references its location that long served as the ancient port.
